The Sonic the hedgehog fandom is one of the most divided fandoms out there. And the biggest divide is between western fans and eastern fans. Reason for this being back in the early days there were two versions of Sonic, the Japanese one and the American one. At first the American Sonic became VERY popular, but a few years later Sega of Japan clamped down redid everything, essentially shoving the eastern version down everyone’s throat. It did okay at first but then quickly declined. This rapid decline, as well as other mismanagement problems that have had a meat-cleaver effect on the fan base, is what caused to the infighting that still goes on to this very day.

But what if the fans, on a person by person basis, were given the ability to choose which version of Sonic they wanted? What if both sides don’t have to feel conflicted by the other ever again? What if BOTH sides could get what they want? What if one version could become more successful without the other being less?

This strategy has been inspired by how there used to be TWO shows based upon Sonic. One was campier and had slapstick humor known as “Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog”. The other was far more serious by focusing on character development and complex plot lines simply known as “Sonic the Hedgehog” or more commonly referred to by the fans as “SatAM”. The logic behind this was to appeal to different audiences in order to INCREASE support.

This strategy has been used elsewhere before. “Command and Conquer” right now has three different universes. And yet their fans do not fight each other. WHY? That is because all the different universes in the same franchise receive EQUAL support.

That is what this petition calls for. Equal support for both the American based and Japanese based universes for Sonic. Sega of Japan would have more control over the Japanese version, and Sega of America would have more control over the American version. There would be games, shows, films, comics, and whatever for both, and the fans worldwide would be given the ability to choose which one they want, maybe even both. With any luck the end result will be MORE fans, MORE sources of revenue for BOTH branches, and LESS factional strife. But in order for this to work, the fans must be allowed to choose which one they want, and just because the fans lean more to one side does not mean more and more should be taken away from the other. There needs to be EQUAL support. And on occasion both universes could borrow a few elements from each other.

The fan wars have gone on long. It’s time we put our differences aside and work together to obtain what we BOTH want. It’s time we focus on our common foe, poor quality. But if we don’t start working together we BOTH could lose everything.
The only solution. Give EVERYONE what they want. It's the only way to do it.

Any suggestions before I spread this around?

Well, Western Sonic gave us a lot of what we normally associate with Sonic now. His attitude, love for chillidogs, and such. Eastern Sonic gave us well...Sonic and some of his morals and move set.

America gave us SatAM, AoStH, Underground, the Archie Comics and is about to give us the Sonic Boom cartoon. It the reason Sonic became so popular so quickly. They also gave Eggman his name Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the name was so popular that even Japan changed it to Robotnik, Eggman became the villain insulting nickname but he oddly uses it himself as is it were his given name. It also gave us Sally, Bunnie and the rest of the SatAM and Archie cast.

Japan gave us the Chaso Emeralds, Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, ect, and most of what we associate with Sonic. But for whatever reason they didn't like the American characters and lore and made sure none of them would have a game appearance beyond their cameos in Sonic Spinball.

There was going to be a SatAM based video game, it had a demo level and everything, but they abandoned it.

I'm fine with two versions because I love them both. But I Want Them Seperate! Because both are very unique and I can't live without either one.

I blame the troublesome production of "Sonic X-treme" for the Japanese canon being "shoved down our throats". The game was a complete catastrophe by Sega of America (some crew fell sick due to exhaustion), and in the end, it failed to impress it's superiors. Because of this, it was decided that Sega of Japan would be the main developers of the series... and the rest is history.

The very same superiors were the ones who demanded the game be changed when it was almost done, and they still had the same deadline. SOJ pretty fucked it up.

Yeah, but I was pointing this out because it seemed like you were pointing the blame at SOA for the game, when they were the ones doing all the work.

I gotta say while the idea itself isn't bad, the facts that can be laid down would not allow this thing to function.

The fact of the matter is that Sonic in Japan sucks. Not talking about my own prsonal opinions of his games made in Japan, I quite like them, but the fact that he doesn't sell nearly as well as he does in Japan as he does in America or Europe. So it wouldn't sell nearly as much to make it happen. Not to mention that from what I've heard, Sega themselves aren't doing to well in terms of money, so they might just be barely scraping by, which could probably explain the partnership with Nintendo for Lost World. Well, that and Wii U sales too.

Not to mention that even if this would be done, which if it would I would like that, that's not going to stop the fans from complaining and fanwaring. We still got the wars over the pairings and voice actors, not to mention that people will still watch both and complain about it. With this fanbase, they'll still do that. I'm not saying this is a bad idea, it sounds like a fantastic idea, it's just that as of right now, it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

I'm not saying that fans of both wouldn't support this, I'm saying that even if the fanbase really wants it, Sega is the one who has to deliver, and they themselves might not be able to.

I like this idea.

Yeah, for all the flack SOJ fans tend to give SOA canon, SOA didn't make Sonic 06, Shadow the Hedgehog, or any of the other numerous fuckups that got churned out during the Dark Age.

I hope you realize that Sonic 06 was supposed to be what fans call a "comeback" (though I think he was already fine). SEGA of Japan has made some pretty bad decisions I'll admit, but they're not the worst. Also, I don't believe the franchise ever had a Dark Age.

Old comment, me liking any of Louis' ideas is unlikely to happen now.

What do you call a four-year stretch of smashing their faces into the polygon ceiling like a cranefly on a window, then?

Ah, I see. Then again, I have the habit of replying to old comments.

I consider it well... well I don't know. I honestly can't come up with a name. Sonic Team just kept on making games, some were received well, some weren't. Every franchise has it's good and bad games, it's really not a new thing.

Ah, ok. So... I'm going to take a guess that the Dark Age was Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06? If so, then I honestly still can't consider it a Dark Age. For starters, I actually happen to enjoy Shadow the Hegehog, though I don't really have much to say about Sonic 06 considering how I didn't really beat that game yet. If I recall correctly, in this one list you made you said that it lasted from 2004 - 2007. While I still don't agree with it, I'm glad you kept it short. A lot of the "fans" I've come by consider it from 2003 - 2010, 2004 - 2010, or 2005 to 2010.

This sounds really good as a proposal, I 'm honestly tired of people say thing nothing can be done , when much can happen when you pull enough people together, this can come together,  I can't really think of anything at the moment of what you should add but if something comes to mind I'll say, but for now  I say this is good  and you should see what others think.

My intention is to create a proposal that would appeal to BOTH eastern AND western fans. I can see how the western fans will like this, but will the eastern fans understand this as well?

I'm pretty sure eastern fans will be more apt to listen at least more understanding to the fact a middle ground should be reached so every one can be happy but  the best thing is putting something out there for everyone to say, letting  community know we need a compromise

I don't like the idea of there being two sets of canon games.  I like it all in one with the good and the bad.  People just gotta quit arguing and deal lol

Because SEGA doesn't have the money to do it properly.  I'd rather have 1 well-made, high-budget Sonic game that may or may not satisfy everyone rather than 2 or 3 mediocre games with all kinds of differences between them.  It's possible to make 3 games, but that doesn't make it probable, at least in this case.  We should focus more on asking for high quality games, games that include all the characters as an option, decent multiplayer and most importantly, good game play.  Asking for more than seems like a lost cause.  That's just my opinion of course. :)

There are legitimate wars for less than video game disputes.  It doesn't matter to me whether people like or dislike a game.  There's always another one on the way that may appeal to them more.  Just gotta be patient.  If Sonic came back from Sonic 06, he can come back from anything.  He's not going anywhere and sooner or later the thing one particular group wants in a game will come around.  Just gotta remember to focus on that and stop whining.  Also, get every console lol

If SEGA can't afford it then even if everyone gets the game type they prefer, they would still be unhappy because it may not function properly due to low budget.  SEGA can't afford to pay 3 different teams of people for one game launch.  I'd say focus more on finding a balance and focusing on the little things instead of being so negative about what is.  For example, I'm disappointed that the multilayer in Sonic Lost World kinda sucks but Amy, Tails and Knuckles being in it, even if only for the story, makes it a little better.  Peeps just gotta look on the bright side :)
