Ben Hurst: Hero by Louis-the-Hedgehog Ben Hurst: Hero by Louis-the-Hedgehog
This is my entry for the 20th birthday of the series Sonic the Hedgehog Saturday AM, more frequently known as "Sonic:SatAM".

So who was Ben Hurst? He may not have created the idea of the series itself, but he was the head writer. Most of the episodes were his, including most, if not all of the best ones. Without him, the American version of Sonic the Hedgehog, as we know it, would not exist. The comic book by Archie Comics Publications that was based upon this series (not the other way around) would never exist.

And even after SatAM was cancelled because SEGA wanted Sonic to only be used as a second skin and not become a unique personality, he fought to resist it. At any point he could have just decided that Sonic the Hedgehog was just a silly franchise and just walked away. Instead he did the exact opposite of that. He took a video game character which at first had no personality and turned him into a tool to teach about life in ways more adult than most people are willing to give credit for. He wanted to make Sonic the legacy of his whole career, and because of it the blue then-legend has come closer than ever before to his true potential. But sadly he has never surpassed that point. Other writers have tried to imitate his style and plans but at best they could never pull it off quite the way he did. And at worst they're not even worthy to lick excrement from his shoes.

Other than these accomplishments as well as being an active member in the fan community, he also tried his hand at short films, like an adaptation of the short story "Interlopers", his few voice acting roles, and other scripts that he's written, very little was known about him. Sadly, he died due to diabetes complications August 10, 2010. Sonic the Hedgehog lost a very good friend.

And personally, if it were not for what he did, I would never be a Sonic fan myself. I would just think he would be just another stupid video game character, especially these days. I would have never gotten into the Sonic franchise, would have never learned of his real potential, would have never have discovered my other interests, would not have met the people that I did, and I would even be known as Louis the Hedgehog, nor would I be having this conversation with you now. I would be a completely different person. I would never have discovered my bliss.

It is my belief that too few people know about this man, and he deserved a much better career than he received. But hey, that's what we do to our heroes in the entertainment industry. We shove them aside in favor of the flavor of the month regardless of how much they don't deserve it. The Hollywood system has become a complete joke. He deserved better than this, and we deserve better than this.

And never before in my life have I seen ANY franchise that had so much potential have it all wasted, liquidated, abused, neglected, and thrown away. Therefore, it is my personal belief that if any franchise needs to be saved from how art has been interfered by the forces of naive, arrogant, greedy, short-sighted business practices, it's Sonic.

Ben has proven himself to us, now we must prove ourselves to him. And the one wish I will have left before I die is that I will one day be reborn in the world of his imagination.

Actually, Sonic Satam was cancelled because of direct competition with Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers (they were both on at the same time, on different channels).  When Sonic moved his timeslot to avoid it, Power Rangers moved theirs to the exact same time, and the competition remained.
I don't know where you're getting this "Sega canceled the show" info from (though I wouldn't put it past them. At least not Sega of Japan).

I really feel I should point out a few things:

1. Satam was not solely Hurst's creation, Len Janson was in fact the creator of the show. Hurst had most of the creative input in later parts, but he is not solely responsible for it.

2. Without being disrespectful to Hurst (it's a tragedy he died young and he did have creative ideas) he did fall into a lot of creative holes that other interpretations do (skewed character spotlight and favoritism=check, 'creator's pet' that is made more important and never allowed to look flawed=check, tired stereotypical comic relief=check, oversimplifying and 'Flanderizing' character personalities=check, pretentious plot points that break the story or lack proper emotional value=check). Satam had lots of good points, but it was still very, VERY flawed, and actually rather one note in some regards.

3. I fail to see it as 'the ONLY Sonic show that cared'. Maybe they don't try to be as 'epic' and brimming with dignity like Satam, but some do genuinely try to bring Sonic to life. AoSth was made around the same time and, while more simplistic slapstick affair, had almost as many good points and nice extra depths. The games are indeed hit and miss, but they do have lots of good points (watch E-102 Gamma's story in Sonic Adventure 1 for example and tell me the games are incapable of depth).

Satam was enjoyable, but it was based on a gimmick like every other version of Sonic, maybe one that ended up garnering more fans (or at least more vocal ones) but still one that is no better or worse than most of the rest. If fans want Satam to be respected I wish they wouldn't keep trying to devalue the other interpretations as proof of it.

I'm trying to watch the vid not gotta say anything about it yeah said that. But as I think of it....I was just a A-hole to Ben Hurst. And when I mean that in a journal after I read this and now I read all of it. I wrote a journal of how bad I felt that I was agasint his writings and that I made these child like reviews long ago on the series cause I didn't like it. Until :iconjarredspekter: came along who thinks the same way about Sonic that the games these days are just yeah. I can link you to the journal....the reviews I don't know if I should call them reviews. You might be shocked.

I'm not a fan of SATAM...but I like the work and effort of what the people did on it. And it's nice to know without it you might not be yeah here talking about it. Just because I'd wanted to be different to make my own ideas for Sonic wanting them to be better then SATAM which I'd thought at first was the worst cartoon ever made.

Yeah I started two paragraph's with I'm but good job just saying man. Everyone forget the first part of the, of the first paragraph. Just yeah this made me think. It reminds me of myself and other people too I think.

SATAM deserved to be rebooted to be rebooted by Disney (who bought ABC in 1995), in 1996. We would have that instead of the garbage known as Sonic the Comics from Archie. God bless him. :')

I think that all I can state is a fact, we still compare the comics, games and later T.V. shows to SatAM, proving just how well and how good that series has held up through the past 20 years.

Not just Hurst, but give some cred to Pat and Len.

I mean, Len Janson created the show to begin with.

No offense meant, but wasn't Hurst's vision a little, simple, in both scope and purpose, in retrospect?  I mean, where is his paragon of virtue and evil of all evil beings that were supposed to battle in a grand style?  All I saw was a band of personalities forged from the worst of the 90s against a living prop and contenders for Worst Henchmen of All Time...

What are you talking about? I'll tell you what's simple, turning a superhero to be into a kidified mascot with no story.

To be fair when Hurst got full control, good ideas were introduced but some of the cast's Flanderization started to come in, with many characters being limited to their positive or negative aspects or forgotten about altogether. I don't find 'kidified mascot' any more one note than 'narcissistic Leeroy Jenkins that's perpetually babysat by his Positive Discrimination girlfriend'.

People tend to forget that Hurst was just part of creative team that made the show. Len Janson and Pat Alee were as much responsible for making the show and when they slipped out of creative control, things started to go downhill. He had good ideas, but he suffered trying to make the whole thing single handed.

Other medias were hardly that one dimentional anyway. Aosth was made the same time, and while a light hearted slapstick show, still had some good points and character takes (Sonic and Tails were more connected, and Scratch and Grounder were truthfully no more one note comic relief than Ant and Dulcy). Satam was good, but it was hardly 'the only Sonic show that cared'.

It is such a shame SEGA never gave this man a chance to work with their mascot.

He was one of the few who really cared about Sonic and wanted to make him a great series for the fans to enjoy. But of course, SEGA couldn't care less about that as time went on.

It was all about the money. Ya gotta love corporate greed. :X

Well you also have to remember. The majority of the Sonic fanbase is in the UK and American Sonic is not very popular there. Because of this Sega can't use a lot of Bens ideas.

1. Making Sonic too different than most would expect.
2. For one thing, he wrote the characters to be overdeveloped, some underdeveloped, and some being quite annoying.
